Fishing Report
Report for 10 June 2009

Well what a closing weekend....we had rain, snow and FISH !!!!

Whilst we thought the past 3 weeks leading up to the closing weekend were good, the closing weekend would have been as best as we have seen for a long time in terms of size and quality of both the Browns and the Rainbows. Record catches from the Eucumbene River of superb Browns with the fittest Rainbows I have seen for a very long time were common place.

Regulars Lee & Owen cleaned up again but were a bit quite after the State of Origin festivities at the Snow Goose and took home some unexpected reminders as a result. Although Ian, Roger and Col it was a great night and they took home some lovely fish to QLD !!!

Local fishing club President Braz had a quick fly fishing lesson with Col in the week before closing and managed a Rainbow on his second cast. Based on the theory that "Fly Fishing is easy" he took himself up to Tantangara t "get into these Browns" ( his words as he is a seasoned pro now !!!) and landed the biggest Brown we have seen for years !!!! (see photo below). We have to applaud him though as he did release it but it seems he will be claiming "Largest Brown for the Month" at the fishing club.

Trolling is very good at the moment also with best areas being Collingwood, Coppermine, White Rocks, Crowe's, Grace Lea Island and Chimneys/Benefield

Mark Fountain (Eucumbene Fishing Charters ) is maintaining his consistent form of late in and around Copper Mine and Benefield and picked up one beauty of a Browny that has had him smiling for days.

Mudeyes, Bardie Grubs, Scrub Worms and Power Bait are proving to still be the bait of choice with best areas being Grace Lea Island, Homeleigh Bay, Seven Gates and Frying Pan.

The usual Loftys Cobras are still doing the major damage, so drop in and see Col for the correct choice as he has them all in stock. Best Lofty at the moment is the Lofty 45, 65 & 13, Eucumbene Special with yellow wings.

Please see the NSW Fisheries regulations covering trout at their site www.fisheries.nsw.gov.au

Tantangara: Only one report of late - Braz's very big Brown

Flyfishing

Eucumbene River was "on fire" (season now closed) with either a Glo-Bug & Nymph or Wooly-Buggar & Nymph as the go to rigs, of course add the obligatory split shot to suit the depth and flow.

Brown wooly worms, Beadhead Black Wooly Buggars or yabby patterns and Stick Caddis are the choice on the Lake either early morning and late evening.

You just have to be mindful of the soft muddy shores at the moment due to the lake going down

Trolling

The trolling has been increasing with best results anytime of the day at the moment. Flat lines & 2-3 colours of leadline proving to be best option.

Lofty's in Orange, Red/Brown and Green/Gold plus Eucumbene Special seem to be particuarly deadly at the moment on leadline (3-5 colours) and flat lines (~50m).

Best areas have been Benefield, Coppermine, White Rocks, Collingwood, Frying Pan, Springwood Bay, Showground Point, Crows,Tolbar and the power lines.

Bait Fishing

Mudeyes are the go to bait at the moment!!

Power bait with scrubworms or Bardie Grubs is producing fish, so pop in and see Col.

Put the Bardie Grub on the bottom and float the Power bait on top.

Best areas still are in and around the Grace Lea Island, Seven Gates, Collingwood, Coppermine, Frying Pan and just about anywhere you can drop a line in.

Braz with his BIG Brown, estimated size is over 10lb given his length and width across the back...

we will never hear the end of it !!!!!

Doing the right thing and releasing it.
